The Community Church of Syosset is an Open and Affirming United Church of Christ celebrating the gifts of God in all people, and welcoming all who seek God's embrace. We're sincere in worship and service, and actively involved in helping to enhance the quality of life for all. We celebrate both our historical roots in the great traditions of the Protestant Reformation and our contemporary vision, which demands that our faith be relevant to us in today's world. On any Sunday morning, the worshipping congregation is always a bit of a mixed collection of people: young, old, gay, straight, single, married, Republican, Democrat, with lots in-between. Perhaps the most outstanding quality of the people here is their friendliness -- although their willingness to help is a close second.
Mission: Since its establishment in 1860, the Community Church has taken seriously its responsibility to be an agent of care, concern and compassion in the community. Our church continues to bring God's light to Syosset through a ministry of outreach, financial assistance, and work for justice and peace. Our local commitments include: Interfaith Nutrition Network, Syosset International, Syosset Counseling Center, Syosset Fire Department, Syosset Teen Council and the L.I. Council of Churches. We also support ministries throughout the metropolitan area, the state and the world.
Our church building is also used for a variety of activities including: The Community Church Nursery School, Syosset Senior Day Care Center, Alcoholics Anonymous, Alanon, Soung Young Korean Church, and the LICO Dog Training Group. Additional information about these above groups is available through the church office at 516-921-2240.
Learning in Worship and Service: We gather each Sunday morning
at 10 am for our weekly service of worship, which is complete with great music and preaching. Following the children's sermon, church school is held concurrent with worship for children 3-7. In addition to our Sunday Services of Worship, we offer Church School, Confirmation Class, Adult Bible Education, mission programs, pastoral counseling, plenty of great fellowship events, and a fine choir that is always open to new singers.
Our Open and Affirming Statement, adopted at our church's January 23, 2000 Annual Meeting, declared the following: "In affirmation of the Spirit of God who is given voice in Paul's letter to the churches in Galatia, and in absolute agreement with the statement that we "are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus" (c.f. Gal 3:26-38), we the members of The Community Church of Syosset, United Church of Christ, declare ourselves to be an Open and Affirming Congregation, confidently welcoming all people -- those of every color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, economic status, marital status, age, and ability -- into the full life and ministry of our congregation."
