Our Mission:
Grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ, our faith community is committed to loving God and serving humanity.

The members of David's UCC participate in a life of worship, mission projects, Christian education, and fellowship activities.  We actively support the local food bank and other outreach programs in the local community, and are involved with numerous mission projects in the global community as well.  We continue to explore new ways in which we can match our gifts and abilities to the needs of others.  Through discipleship, study, stewardship, and active service, we seek to promote the Kingdom of God in our neighborhood and in the world.
At David's UCC, we believe that the message of the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ is for everyone.  A rural faith community located in the Line Mountain region of central Pennsylvania, the people of David's are known for their big heart and wonderful Pennsylvania Dutch hospitality.

Join us for worship, fellowship, study, and service,
as together we seek to serve God by serving others.

Inclement Weather Procedure

In the event of snow of other inclement weather on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning, Pastor Ray will consult with the Council President, and decide whether to cancel church that day.  The church answering machine will be updated by8am on Sunday morning.  So any time after 8am, you can call the church (570-425-3242) to find out if we are open or not.  But please - use your own judgment - even if the church is open, if you feel the roads are too dangerous to travel, stay home.  We'll miss you, but at least we'll know that you are safe.

The Mahanoy Koinonia Ministerium will provide midweek community worship services during Lent.  This year, we will reflect on various Biblical stories about water, including the waters of chaos and creation, the waters that satisfy all thirst, as well as the waters of baptism, repentance, and redemption.  Join the community for worship, and come "wade in the water"!  All services begin at 7 pm.  Refreshments will be served after each service.

Boy Scout Sunday - February 5

GOD AND CHURCH

On Sunday, February 5, the Boy Scouts of Troop 311 will be receiving their God & Church awards.  There will be coffee, cake, and fellowship following the service.  Please join us for this celebration of achievement.

Presentation of Girl Scout Gold Award to Rachel Savidge - March 11

On Sunday, March 11, the Girl Scout Gold Award will be awarded to Rachel Savidge.  The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. A national award with national standards, it represents a girl's time, leadership, creativity and effort contributed to improving her community.  A Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project addresses a community need, produces impact that is measurable and sustainable, and is a local project that has national and/or global links.  It involves designing and leading a Take Action Project that takes a suggested 65 hours, including "planning and doing" time, to complete.  Please join us for this special recognition of achievement, and please stay after the service for a luncheon.

Invite a Friend to Church Sunday - March 18

Do you know a neighbor, coworker, or family member who does not attend church? Have you ever thought about inviting them to join you - even one time - for worship and fellowship at David's? Then muster up your courage, and invite them to join us for worship on Sunday, March 18, for Invite a Friend to Church Sunday. This will be a special service designed to be "user-friendly" even for folks who have never attended a worship service. Light refreshments will follow. To make it even easier to invite people, special invitation cards & envelopes will be provided in the back of church. So put your thinking-caps on, and start inviting people!

Church Fundraiser at Hoss's Restaurant, Shamokin Dam

Go, eat, and raise money for David's!  It's that simple.  Get a special coupon from church, and take it with you to Hoss's Restaurant in Shamokin Dam anytime (11am-9pm) on Wednesday, April 11.  Present your coupon when you place your order, then enjoy a nice meal.  The restaurant will keep track of all the coupons received that day, and will send the church a check for 20% of the total (as long as our orders total $125 or more for the day).  So go have a nice meal with friends and family, and help our church raise money.

Combined Christian Unity Service/Concert - April 22, 4pm

In the spirit of fellowship between our two churches, we will once again join for a special worship service to express our Christian Unity.  On Sunday, April 22, at 4pm, our two churches will have a special combined worship service, held at St. Paul's in Sacramento.  The service is especially designed to provide an opportunity for both churches to share our in-house musical and dramatic talents.  Young or old, vocal or instrumental, solo or combo, skit or puppets - please be in touch ASAP with Pastor Ray or Amy Ney to begin preparing YOUR music and/or drama for this special service.  Following the program, we will all share a potluck supper downstairs in St. Paul's fellowship hall - so bring something to share!

Wireless Speaker in the Nursery

At David's, we pride ourselves in having a warm and welcoming worship space.  And that welcome extends to our children and littler ones.  But just in case you find yourself and your little one in the nursery, we have installed a wireless speaker (see photo) there.  You and your little one still will be able to hear everything that goes through the church's sound system.  If you want to learn how to use it, just ask Pastor Ray.

Upcoming Youth Activities

·         February 11 - Volunteer, along with youths from Sacramento, make and serve meals at Elijah's Bowl (soup kitchen located inside First Reformed UCC, Sunbury, 9am-12:30pm, must be 6th-grade or older), followed by ice skating at Sunbury Ice Rink (1-3:30pm)  Adults welcome as well.  (Carpool from Hebe at 8:15am, back by 4:30pm)

·         February 25, 4pm - Snow-tubing at Eagle Rock, Hazleton - carpool from St. Paul's Sacramento, stop for supper along the way, back by 10pm.  Cost: $12, plus money for supper.  Contact Pastor Ray, or call Sue Clark (570-294-6567) or sign up at church by February 10.  Invite a friend, dress warmly, and get ready for snow!

Hartman Center 2012 Schedules Available at David's

Our Conference camp and retreat center, Hartman Center, located in Milroy, PA, has just sent out the new 2012 schedule and registration form.  This year, the camp has worked hard to REDUCE prices due to the economy.  There is also a new Christian Community Week (July 1-7) when entire families can come and enjoy activities together (or just come for half of the week (July 1-4 or 4-7).  On-line registration for all camp programs is available at www.hartmancenter.com.  Brochures are available in the back hall at church (or ask Pastor Ray).  And don't forget that scholarship assistance is available from the Ollie Weller Trust Fund for campers.  Check it out, and register early!

David's Cares....

February Offering

The Special Offering for the parish this month has been designated for Lancaster Theological Seminary (Pastor Ray's alma mater).  The seminary provides leadership training for lay people interested in specific types of ministry, as well as educating for ordained ministry.  More and more the seminary is finding that most of those who come to the school are "second career" people -- those who have discovered that their job or profession does not allow them to do ministry, and having the deep desire to serve Christ through ordination.

Two Sunday School Valentine Projects

The Sunday School is collecting nonperishable goodies to pack and ship to several of our community's "far-aways" - people serving in the military, as well as college students.  All of these items are due by February 5.  The Sunday School will also pack and hand-deliver Valentine's Day cookies to many of our local shut-in church members and friends.  Please bring your homemade cookies to church on February 12, so they can be packed up and delivered.  Note: If you have an address for a college student or military person, please give that address to Chris Leader by February 5.

Central Association 2011 Annual Church Vocations Fund Appeal

Central Association Members in Discernment (formerly known as "students in care") for the Christian ministry spend over $20,000 a year just to attend seminary.  Many begin their pastoral ministries with as much as $40,000 in financial debt. They receive no financial assistance from the denomination.  At our association's giving levels, we can distribute on an average less than $3,500 per year in scholarship aid to our students.

You can help with seminary costs by contributing to the Annual Church Vocations Fund Appeal.  Please use the special offering envelope for your contribution.  All of your gifts will support seminary costs of our students.  Remember - when a student graduates from seminary, this accomplishment is made possible, in part, by your contributions to the Church Vocations Fund.  We will distribute these special offering envelopes on February 19, and will dedicate the offering on February 26.

One Great Hour of Sharing 2012

Deciding to share is tough sometimes, especially when we feel we barely have enough to get by ourselves.  But compared to people whose lives have been ravaged by disaster, or who live on less than $1 a day, we have a great abundance.

On February 19, we will begin our 2012 OGHS (One Great Hour of Sharing) program, where we will be invited to help people in need around the world and in communities impacted by disasters in the United States through the OGHS offering.  Our program will culminate with a dedication of offerings on March 18.

As the church, we are called to help one another, even through the sharing of our own resources.  Giving changes so many things, for the receiver and the giver.  Can you imagine the joy on a mother's face, who because of your gift, can send her children to school or provide them with a meal before bed?  OGHS supports many initiatives that help women start their own businesses or learn a wage-earning skill.  Programs that through you gift, you become a partner.

By sharing our resources, combined with offerings from thousands of other congregations in eight denominations across the United States, we:

·         Build homes, schools, medical clinics, and clean water and sewage facilities in villages devastated by earthquakes, floods, and poverty

·         Bring safety, shelter, and food to refugees after often violent circumstances have made their hometowns uninhabitable

·         Nurture stronger futures and self-sufficiency through health care, education, job training, and tools for livelihoods.

We are blessed that God is able to provide when and where help is needed through us (2 Corinthians 9:8-15).  When you make your gift, please give generously.  One Great Hour of Sharing:  sharing resources, changing lives, bringing joy!

Campbell's Soup Labels

The Elizabethville Library is collecting Campbell's Soup Labels.  A collection box has been placed in the back of the church.  If you need more information, please see Pam Zilinski.

Box Tops for Education

Dalmatia Elementary School is collecting "Box Tops for Education" to pay for their field trips, school supplies, and other things they might need.   Please support them by dropping your specially-marked box tops in the designated box in the back of church.  Please see Karen Snyder if you need a list of the items that carry these box tops.  Thanks so much!

Red Prayer Bowl at David's
Remember that you can always place your written prayer requests in our red prayer bowl, located in the front of the sanctuary.  Our Prayer Chain meets monthly to review and pray over all requests.  And if YOU feel called to join this prayer ministry - perhaps you have the spiritual gift of intercessory prayer - then please let Charlotte Bingaman or Pastor Ray know, and we will be sure to include you at the monthly prayer gatherings.  Note: when the group meets and prays over requests, they are added to our prayer list, and are removed from the prayer bowl.

Teddy Bear Collection Drive for World Surgical Foundation

The World Surgical Foundation Inc. (WSF) serves people in developing or impoverished countries where modern healthcare is not available or is too costly.  All around the world, there are children and adults who cannot get the healthcare they need.  In many places, the technology is not available.  In others it is just too costly.  The WSF takes healthcare where it is not otherwise available.  From poor villages in developing countries to free clinics in an American city, the WSF makes healthcare accessible.  Serving the under-served population in Third World Countries to someday establishing free surgical clinics in the USA - WSF will make surgical care accessible to all!

Here's the local connection for us: the WSF is headed up by Pediatric Surgeon and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg, Dr. Domingo Alvear.  And this locally-based, global mission needs our help.  The WSF will be traveling to Ethiopia this fall, for the second year in a row, to provide free medical services there.  They want to take at least 200 additional plush-toy teddy bears, which provide great comfort to the many young patients they work with.  All teddy bears must be brand-new, not used.  12" bears or smaller (e.g. Beanie Babies) are ideal.  A collection box has been placed in the back of church for teddy bears.  Please help fill the box, and fill a young child's heart.

Blanket Ministry Needs Your Help

You know that David's collects blankets for Bethesda Mission, to distribute to the poor and homeless in Harrisburg, but don't forget that some of our members make blankets for them as well.  Jean Graff keeps busy sewing blankets from scrap material, but she needs flannel to line the inside of each blanket.  If you have any new or used flannel, or new or used flannel sheets, Jean can put them to good use.  Please see her, or mark your donation "for Jean," and leave it in the blanket box in the back of church.

Donations for Elizabethville Clothing Closet
Don't forget that we have an ongoing request from the Elizabethville Clothing Closet for gently-worn/almost new clothing for babies and children.  Please leave your donations in the collection box in the back of church.
