OurMission: Grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ, our faith community is committed to loving God and serving humanity.

The members of David's UCC participate in a life of worship, mission projects, Christian education, and fellowship activities.  We actively support the local food bank and other outreach programs in the local community, and are involved with numerous mission projects in the global community as well.  We continue to explore new ways in which we can match our gifts and abilities to the needs of others.  Through discipleship, study, stewardship, and active service, we seek to promote the Kingdom of God in our neighborhood and in the world.

At David's UCC, we believe that the message of the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ is for everyone.  A rural faith community located in the Line Mountain region of central Pennsylvania, the people of David's are known for their big heart and wonderful Pennsylvania Dutch hospitality.

Join us for worship, fellowship, study, and service,
as together we seek to serve God by serving others.

Inclement Weather Procedure

In the event of snow of other inclement weather on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning, Pastor Ray will consult with the Council President, and decide whether to cancel church that day.  The church answering machine will be updated by 8am on Sunday morning.  So any time after 8am, you can call the church (570-425-3242) to find out if we are open or not.  But please - use your own judgment - even if the church is open, if you feel the roads are too dangerous to travel, stay home.  We'll miss you, but at least we'll know that you are safe.

Worship Time Flip-Flop Begins on April 11

Starting on the first regular Sunday of April (April 11), we will flip worship times for the next 12 months:

·        David's will begin worship at 8:45am, with Sunday School for children on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, and Sunday School for adults following worship each Sunday.

·        St. Paul's will begin worship at 10:15am, with Sunday School for children occurring during worship.

We will continue these new worship times through the last Sunday in March, March 27, 2011.  On April 3, 2011, we will flip-flop again for twelve months.  This will NOT affect our special worship time arrangements for Christmas Eve, Easter morning, or Homecoming.  Please don't let a time change discourage you from attending worship and supporting the church.  God is always worthy of our worship, no matter what time we gather.

Upcoming Events

Lent 2010

This year, Ash Wednesday is February 17.  Our worship service and communion will be a combined service, held at David's UCC, Hebe, 7pm.  As per our tradition, communion will not be served again until Maundy Thursday, April 1.  This service will be held at St. Paul's, Sacramento, 7pm.

The Mahanoy Koinonia Ministerium will again sponsor midweek community Lenten worship services.  Inspired by the classic spiritual disciplines of the Christian tradition, we will delve into such practices as Prayer, Charity, Service, Tithing, and Fasting.  Come worship, learn, and deepen your faith!

·        March 3, 7pm - Zion Church, Herndon - Rev. Ray Holland preaching on service

·        March 10, 7pm - St. Paul's UCC, Urban - Rev. Sonja Ware preaching on fasting

·        March 17, 7pm - St. John's Lutheran Church, Leck Kill - Rev. Jane Compton preaching on charity

·        March 24, 7pm - Himmel's Union Church, Rebuck - Rev. Michael Ware, preaching on tithing

All services begin at 7 pm.  Refreshments will be served after each service.

Lent is a period of six weeks in which we prepare ourselves to hear once again the great stories of resurrection. Traditionally, Lent has been a time of fasting and prayer.  The mood is somber and reflective; the purple color is used in the sanctuary to express penitence.  It is a time to look inward, to assess our lives, and ponder where we are in our relationship with God.  We remember God's covenant and promise, and God's faithfulness as we grow in God's ways.  In Lent we look forward to doing things in a different way.  Please join us this Lenten season, for reflection, and to grow closer to our Lord!

Stations of the Cross

Throughout Holy Week (March 28-April 3), you will have the opportunity to spend quiet time in meditation.  Borrowing from the Episcopal, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic traditions, we will have pictures and written prayers placed around the sanctuary in both churches, depicting scenes from the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.  This meditative environment is particularly appropriate for prayerful use on Good Friday.

Donations Needed for Easter Egg Hunt

From now through March 28, the Church School is seeking donations of small individually-wrapped candies that will fit into plastic eggs (we already have PLENTY of plastic eggs).  We will be using them for the children's Easter Egg Hunt, to be held at the church on Saturday, April 3, 10am.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Intergenerational Sunday School Event

The Church School will host an intergenerational Sunday School activity, following the Palm Sunday breakfast on March 28.  The activity will run from 9-10am (worship begins at 10:15am).  Please join us for some educational fun for all ages.

Lend a Hand - Stayover Volunteers Needed for Haven Ministry

Here is our chance to follow Jesus' example to minister to "the least of these" - the vulnerable people in our society.  Haven Ministry is again looking for adults to stay overnight at their shelter.  Since our volunteers from our previous shifts have said how well things went, and how meaningful they found the experience, we are signed up now for a week in March.  As before, all you need to do is arrive by 5pm, lock up the common room later in the evening, stay overnight in a secure, recently refurnished bedroom (all new mattresses and bedding), and then you can leave anytime after 6am the next morning.  (If you need to leave earlier because of work, arrangements can be made.)  There is no cooking, no cleanup, no chores - just being there.  The director, Cathy Teisher, will meet with you when you arrive to review what you need to know.

Sounds easy?  It is.  So can you help?  Just one night - either one or two people (parents may also bring their children).  Haven Ministry is located at 1043 South Front Street in Sunbury.  (You probably drive right by it whenever you cross the river going toward Shamokin Dam.)  The shelter needs churches to commit for one-week blocks - we are signed up for Sunday-Saturday, March 7-13.

Remember - this is an extremely simple, but extremely important, outreach ministry that our churches can provide.  Please use the sign-up sheet at church, or let Pastor Ray know as soon as possible, which day(s) you can help.  Thanks.

Combined Christian Unity Service/Concert - April 18, 4pm

As we continue to strengthen the fellowship between our two churches, what better way than with a special worship service to express our Christian Unity?  On Sunday, April 19, at 4pm, our two churches will have a special combined worship service, held at St. Paul's in Sacramento.  The service is especially designed to provide an opportunity for both churches to share our in-house musical and dramatic talents.  Young or old, vocal or instrumental, solo or combo, skit or puppets - please be in touch ASAP with Pastor Ray, Amy Ney, or Sandy Troutman to begin preparing YOUR music and/or drama for this special service.  Following the program, we will all share a potluck supper downstairs in St. Paul's fellowship hall - so bring something to share!

David's Cares....

One Great Hour of Sharing Program 2010: Do You Love Me?  Feed My Sheep

In his final moments with his disciples, the Good Shepherd asks Peter, "Do you love me?"  "Yes," Peter replies. Then, "Feed my lambs," Jesus tells him.  "Tend my sheep."  Three times, Jesus passionately repeats his instruction, pressing his followers: If you love me, take care of the people I love. (John 21:15-19)

The members of the family of God including those in parts of the world we may never visit, are God's flock, the sheep of God's pasture (Ezekiel 34:31).  Yet, God's flock is often forcefully scattered as people are chased from their homes and livelihoods by brutal expressions of war, or as communities are blasted by natural disasters, or as societies and countries are ground down by unrelenting hunger, disease, and poverty.

One Great Hour of Sharing empowers the United Church of Christ to offer disaster relief and refugee aid, meeting basic needs in Christ's name throughout the world.  Through One Great Hour of Sharing: disaster victims quickly receive shelter, food, water, and medical supplies; local communities develop secure sources of food and clean water; minds and bodies grow stronger with new schools and medical clinics; refugees receive housing and long-term help to construct new lives; women and communities are empowered through micro-credit loans and community development opportunities.

In challenging times, we often wonder how much we can afford to sacrifice to help feed Jesus' beloved sheep, when our needs remain pressing.  Perhaps only through prayer can we decide how to respond to Jesus' call to feed His Sheep.  Remember the feeding of the 5,000: when Jesus asked the disciples to feed the hungry crowd, the disciples despaired (Mark 6:34-44).  The five loaves and two fish seemed insignificant compared to the massive need.  Yet when each gave sacrificially from what they had, through God's blessing, their gifts turned into a miracle of compassion for all.

Through One Great Hour of Sharing, our gifts meet compelling needs, while also bringing the blessing of compassion into our own lives. The current economic situation is challenging for many of us.  For many others, it has pushed beyond challenging to be life-threatening.  Heed Jesus' call to feed his sheep with a generous, even sacrificial, gift to One Great Hour of Sharing.  Sharing your resources, you'll change lives ? including your own.

Our One Great Hour of Sharing program will begin on Sunday, February 14.  We will dedicate these offerings on Sunday, March 14.

Teddy Bear Collection Drive for World Surgical Foundation

The World Surgical Foundation Inc. (WSF) serves people in developing or impoverished countries where modern healthcare is not available or is too costly.  All around the world, there are children and adults who cannot get the healthcare they need.  In many places, the technology is not available.  In others it is just too costly.  The WSF takes healthcare where it is not otherwise available.  From poor villages in developing countries to free clinics in an American city, the WSF makes healthcare accessible.  Serving the under-served population in Third World Countries to someday establishing free surgical clinics in the USA - WSF will make surgical care accessible to all!

Here's the local connection for us: the WSF is headed up by Pediatric Surgeon and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg, Dr. Domingo Alvear.  And this locally-based, global mission needs our help.  The WSF will be traveling to Ethiopia this fall, for the second year in a row, to provide free medical services there.  They want to take at least 200 additional plush-toy teddy bears, which provide great comfort to the many young patients they work with.  All teddy bears must be brand-new, not used.  12" bears or smaller (e.g. Beanie Babies) are ideal.  A collection box has been placed in the back of church for teddy bears.  Please help fill the box, and fill a young child's heart.

Blanket Ministry Needs Your Help

You know that David's collects blankets for Bethesda Mission, to distribute to the poor and homeless in Harrisburg, but don't forget that some of our members make blankets for them as well.  Jean Graff keeps busy sewing blankets from scrap material, but she needs flannel to line the inside of each blanket.  If you have any new or used flannel, or new or used flannel sheets, Jean can put them to good use.  Please see her, or mark your donation "for Jean," and leave it in the blanket box in the back of church.

Donations for Elizabethville Clothing Closet

Don't forget that we have an ongoing request from the Elizabethville Clothing Closet for gently-worn/almost new clothing for babies and children.  Please leave your donations in the collection box in the back of church.
