The First Congregational Mission Statement
"To honor and glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ within a caring community of faith that seeks to serve the needs of a hurting world." Greetings in the Name of Christ! I bring you greetings in the name of our Lord, from the friends and members of First Congregational United Church of Christ. Since the dedication of the original Church building, June 15th of 1865, First Congregational Church has devoted itself to the ongoing work and ministry expressed in the mission statement above. For one hundred and thirty five years this church has faithfully addressed the needs of a hurting world in direct response to the call and commission of Jesus Christ.I began my ministry here as the twenty-sixth Pastor of First Congregational Church, in March of 1999. What drew me to this unique place was this churches self-proclaimed desire to grow spiritually and a strong historical record of unabashed service in the name of Jesus. The folks of First Congregational Church take Christ's call to care for the neighbor in need very seriously. Whether it is preparing the annual Fall Thank Offering Baskets to be delivered to fifty of our community's needy families, working at the "Nearly New" thrift shop, which provides economical clothing and house wares, going on the annual All Church Mission Trip, or serving as a "Teaching Congregation," as seminarians prepare for ministry; you will discover a Church which is seeking continually to serve in the name of Jesus Christ. When you enter this Church you will find a Spirit of love, joy and service which binds people together in mutual respect. You recognize it in the eyes of committed church leaders and dedicated staff. You perceive it on the faces of children excited to learn about Jesus, and in the laughter of young people involved in our three youth groups. You hear it in our traditional worship, in the choral sounds of joyful praise, and in the strains of beautiful music each Sunday. In short what you discover at First Congregational Church is the spirit of God alive and well. My hope and prayer as pastor of this congregation is that we will continue to grow spiritually, both in our knowledge of God and in our continued committed service to God. Here in this place God has graced us with all that we need to move into an exciting future as a Church family.
