Our Mission: The mission of the First Congregational Church of Leverett is to become an interdependent community of diverse individuals who share a continued growth in the understanding and practice of the Christian faith. Our journey in this growth takes us inward as we search the Bible and other resources to expand our thoughts and spirits and outward as we explore ways to serve our community, at home and beyond, through our participation in the global witness of the United Church of Christ.
We are a diverse congregation, coming from the religious right, left and center and at least a dozen different denominations. We are a friendly congregation, evidenced by noisy greetings before and after church.
Many interdenominational and inter-religious families have found satisfying common ground here. Respect for a wide variety of views is expected. Some of us want the familiar rituals of our upbringing, while some don't. Most of us want to keep the parts of our religious upbringing that have sustained and comforted us.
We try to understand how our faith is connected to current national and international events, as well as our daily lives. We like exposure to theological challenge and ideas -- we do not like an authoritarian approach to faith and theology. Social activism, while encouraged, is left to each individual.
We want to help our neediest neighbors confidentially through our local missions and personal assistance programs. We want interfaith dialogue with others in our community. We want to live at peace with all our neighbors.
"The priesthood of all believers" is important to us. Everyone pitching in and being needed buoys our healthy congregation. Some of us lay folks find when pressed that we can lead worship and connect with our fellow worshippers. We want everyone, members and nonmembers, to be welcome and to participate in communion and our lay leadership.
Come worship with us! You will be welcomed.
