Our Mission: First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Red Oak is an active and dynamic congregation with a rich history and an exciting ministry to the community. We welcome into this community of faith, and affirm the participation in all aspects of church life, persons of every age, race, gender, nationality, ability, and sexual orientation. We will empower ourselves, our children, and one another to be fully present in the world, living in Christ's image and striving for justice and peace.
Our defining statements help guide and shape our worship, mission, and all aspects of our ministry.
Defining Statements:
- We see Jesus Christ, the human face of God, as our way to the realm of God. We also recognize the faithfulness of people who have other ways to God's realm.
- We think that the way we treat one another is more important than the way we express our beliefs. We take the Bible seriously, not literally, using its history of humanity's encounters and understandings of God over the centuries in our worship and life together. We are especially grateful for the accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ found in the New Testament.
- Our practice of open Communion represents our understanding that sharing bread and wine in Jesus' name is a representation of God's love for all peoples.
- We find more grace in the search for meaning than in absolute certainty in the questions than the answers.
- In keeping with the life and teachings of Christ Jesus, we joyfully and unconditionally welcome all people of any age, gender, race, culture, ability or sexual orientation into our community of faith and affirm the worth of all peoples as unique individuals made in God's image. We are open to the special gifts that each person brings and invite each one to participate in the life of our church.
- We see ourselves as a spiritual community in which we discover the resources necessary for our work in the world, striving to bring justice, peace and hope to all people.
- We offer the shared experience of the method and discipline of contemplative prayer to all who see a deeper personal experience of the divine presence.
- We recognize that our faith entails costly discipleship, renunciation of privilege, and conscientious resistance to evil - as has always been the tradition of the church.
