SALEM UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Welcome to Salem! YOU are invited to participate in the life and mission of Salem United Church of Christ. Located in downtown Rochester, New York, our ministry calls us to serve Jesus Christ in the city. An historic church with a vibrant future - Salem was founded in 1873 when Rochester was brimming with new life and possibility. Our beautiful sanctuary is enhanced with glorious stained glass windows depicting the stories of the Bible. We worship each Sunday morning at 10:00 am. Our services are lively; we worship the God who continually breaks into human life with joyful surprises! Taking the Bible seriously, not literally - We understand our faith as a treasure handed down from those who have gone before. But we also understand that the best of our tradition is God's barrier-breaking action among us in the present and future. "Behold, I am doing a new thing," Isaiah tells us of God's intention for people. Each week, our pastors preach a sermon which is Biblically based, sensitive to the original context of the scripture lesson and relevant to life and faith today. Children at Salem - Children are an important part of the community of Salem Church. Childcare for children five and below is offered during the morning worship. Children above kindergarten age are welcomed in our worship service. They participate in a time with the children, and have bulletins and special surprises to keep hands busy as they learn to worship by participating in the service each week. Music at Salem - Music is an important part of our life together. Our Chancel Choir sings at each morning service. Spirit Singers, a children's choir for children ages 5-12, and our Intergenerational Bell Choir, play regularly. In addition, a concert series, "Salem Fridays" offers unique musical offerings. "Jazz Salem" a worship service in Jazz meets on Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm. Jazz Salem - Each Sunday evening at 5:00 pm, sounds of jazz waft from the second floor parlor. Red Wierenga, our pianist, and occasional instrumental soloists provide the music for this relaxed, comfortable service. Holy Communion is offered each week to all who come. Nutrition Center - Called to serve Christ in the city, each Monday and Tuesday noon, Salem provides a meal for Rochester's neediest citizens. Our volunteers come from churches throughout the region to help. Bible study is offered on Mondays at 11:00 am for all who are interested. Spiritus Christi Church - Salem enjoys a partnership relationship with the Spiritus Christi Church, a radical Catholic church which ordains women, and has a radically inclusive ministry. They share our building and our commitment to serve the people of this city. How to find us - We are located on Bittner Street, where St. Paul Blvd. meets the inner loop. Coming from the east, exit 490 at Clinton Avenue. Take Clinton past Main Street and turn left on Andrews Street, then make a quick right angled turn onto Bittner. Coming from the west, exit 490 left at "Plymouth Avenue - Inner Loop" and then stay left to get on the Inner Loop. From the Inner Loop you will exit at St. Paul Blvd. Get into the lane next to the far right lane so that you can angle right onto Bittner Street. On Sunday mornings, evenings and weekends, there is plenty of free parking in the lots across the street from the church. On weekdays, park in the small Salem lot to the south of the church, or park in the lot that is diagonally across the street from the church. (Please do not park in the YWCA lot or the Kovalsky-Carr lots during the day.) Our Staff
